Tripepi Smith’s Always-Be-Learning (#ABL) culture drives us to stay up to speed on constantly changing social media platforms. This knowledge empowers our team to track, interpret and adapt to the latest and greatest social media trends on behalf of the public agencies we serve. The following is the latest installment of our regular roundup of social media news you need to know:

  1. On December 10, 2022 Twitter officially relaunched its paid verification plan, Twitter Blue. The relaunch comes after much back and forth about what the program would be. To become verified on Twitter and receive the blue checkmark, users must pay $8 a month on the web or $11 a month on iOS. The perks of being verified include higher visibility of tweets in replies, mentions and searches, fewer ads, and the ability to post longer videos. While these benefits are all useful, it continues to be seen if Twitter Blue is essential for local government entities
  2. In other Twitter news, the platform may soon increase its allowed number of characters per tweet from 280 to 4000. The platform has shared a mock-up of longer tweets and how they might look on users’ feeds. From the examples, the longer tweets will still appear in-stream at the regular length and include a ‘Show More’ indicator so that users who want to keep reading can expand to read the full tweet. This feature could be a huge change in how Twitter operates, as it would now be open to long form content.
  3. For the past couple of months, YouTube has been releasing new comment and reaction features to make video watching more interactive. Now the platform has launched emoji reactions within live streams. This latest update will give users the ability to send reactions in real time to live videos. Similar to reactions seen on Instagram and Facebook, users will have a range of emoji options to respond with such as the heart, laughing face, confetti, question marks and more.
  4. TikTok continues to be the fastest-growing social media platform. The platform is now testing out a new horizontal, full-width display for videos. This new display will allow users to watch full-screen videos similar to YouTube. This, combined with TikTok’s 10-minute uploads, will give creators the ability to maximize engagement.
