The City of Pomona Begins Redistricting Process
As the City of Pomona prepared to launch its redistricting process, the City tapped Tripepi Smith to assist with their large outreach and engagement efforts. The redistricting process was triggered by the completion of the 2020 Census, and like hundreds of local government agencies across California, the City must complete it in a timely fashion.
The City’s redistricting process is benefitting from an independent commission to draw new district boundaries. Since being selected, the Commissioners have held their first meeting and plan to hold public hearings, workshops and meetings on a monthly basis to educate and involve the community of Pomona in the boundary drawing process and to intensify communities of interest. The Commission is also assisted by National Demographics Corporation (NDC), California’s premier demographer, to offer mapping tools and provide the technical guidance for the Commission to create legally-compliant district boundaries. The Commission will complete the process and adopt new maps in early 2022 to be used in the November 2022 election.

Following every 10-year Census count, cities and other public agencies with districts redraw their district boundaries based on the area’s population changes indicated in the Census data. This process protects every citizen’s right to fair and equal representation in their governments by drawing districts to contain roughly the same population sizes while still respecting local communities of interest.
