The City of Pomona Begins Redistricting Process

  |   News   |   No comment

As the City of Pomona prepared to launch its redistricting process, the City tapped Tripepi Smith to assist with their large outreach and engagement efforts. The redistricting process was triggered by the completion of the 2020 Census, and like hundreds of local government agencies across California, the City must complete it in a timely fashion.

The City’s redistricting process is benefitting from an independent commission to draw new district boundaries. Since being selected, the Commissioners have held their first meeting and plan to hold public hearings, workshops and meetings on a monthly basis to educate and involve the community of Pomona in the boundary drawing process and to intensify communities of interest. The Commission is also assisted by National Demographics Corporation (NDC), California’s premier demographer, to offer mapping tools and provide the technical guidance for the Commission to create legally-compliant district boundaries. The Commission will complete the process and adopt new maps in early 2022 to be used in the November 2022 election.

“Keeping our residents updated on all city business is a top priority for the City of Pomona. The redistricting process is a topic we believe our community should be well-informed about, and we are excited to get residents engaged. The City has made substantial investments in education, outreach and mapping tools to empower our community on this fundamental element of representation,” said City Manager James Makshanoff. “Tripepi Smith is an excellent partner for the redistricting process and their expertise in conducting effective outreach campaigns will be a valuable asset during this important process.”

Following every 10-year Census count, cities and other public agencies with districts redraw their district boundaries based on the area’s population changes indicated in the Census data. This process protects every citizen’s right to fair and equal representation in their governments by drawing districts to contain roughly the same population sizes while still respecting local communities of interest.

“Tripepi Smith’s outreach plans are tailored to our client’s needs and our team engages with the specifics of each project to ensure quality designs and outreach efforts. This year, we are working with dozens of agencies to address their redistricting outreach needs, and this work is giving us scale and expertise that benefits each client significantly,” said President Ryder Todd Smith. “With much work ahead, we are thrilled to provide support to the Commission in partnership with City of Pomona staff and National Demographics Corporation.”

As part of the requested scope, Tripepi Smith designed a dedicated redistricting process website that serves as a central hub for redistricting information and status updates, including details on future public hearings, mapping opportunities, FAQs and more.
