City of Orange Calls on Tripepi Smith for Assistance with SB 1383 Outreach and Communications
In May 2021, the City of Orange called upon Tripepi Smith to lead education and outreach efforts regarding Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) and the city’s organics recycling program.
The State of California signed SB 1383 into law in 2016. It aims to reduce short-lived climate pollutants by reducing organic waste disposal by 75% by 2025, as well as rescuing for people to eat at least 20% of currently disposed of surplus food by 2025. Organics like food scraps and yard trimmings make up half of what Californians dump in landfills, and organic waste in landfills emits 20% of the state’s methane – a pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
To comply with SB 1383, the City of Orange, in partnership with its hauler CR&R Environmental Services, is ensuring all its residents and businesses have the necessary programs in place to separate waste properly. In addition to providing services, the City is focusing on conducting outreach to engage all its community members about the new requirements – particularly groups such as multifamily residences, property managers, and businesses.
“Helping Orange community members understand and follow these new requirements means more organics get diverted properly,” said Public Works Administrations Manager Josh Soliz. “Bringing in Tripepi Smith to help with outreach and education on this issue has been crucial to the program’s success.”
The Tripepi Smith team created an animated explainer video, content for a dedicated webpage, regular social media content, several press releases and graphic assets including banners, magnets and a city-wide postcard. Tripepi Smith is also planning to organize and run three community workshops on SB 1383 for the City of Orange in the spring of 2023.
“It is always a pleasure for Team Tripepi Smith to work with the City of Orange,” said Principal Jen Nentwig. “The City of Orange is dedicated to ensuring its community members are implementing the practices required by SB 1383, and it’s a privilege to support them during this important transition.”
