Aliso Viejo presentation booklet
Aliso Viejo folder design

City of Aliso Viejo

The Economic Development department at the City of Aliso Viejo asked Tripepi Smith to design materials that would build support for planned redevelopment, as well as provide clear information to local businesses about the process. Our designers used GIS maps to create several phase maps, with several matching infographics. We also created the presentation materials with engaging photography, layout and covers for a pocket-folder, enclosed USB, presentation booklet and matching PowerPoint presentation.

City of American Canyon

In 2020, Tripepi Smith began to work with the City of American Canyon, providing on-call communications and design support. In addition to generating the overall Communications Plan and providing related media and press services, Tripepi Smith has created designs for print, social media and infographics.

Web and infographics

City of Culver City

Over the years, Tripepi Smith has had an ongoing engagement with Culver City for communications. This ranged from print (e.g. posters and flyers) to digital (explainer videos and content for social media and web). The work has evolved and now includes things like transforming complex rent control information into “decision tree” infographics to help tenants and landlords navigate the complexity of new rent control regulations—or creating a sub-brand for Culver City Transportation in support of their MOVE initiative to transform how residents get around.

Cupertino Style Guide

City of Cupertino

After providing the City of Cupertino with a communication assessment in 2015, the City further engaged Tripepi Smith in 2017 to update their style guide and refresh their brand identity. While maintaining the integrity of the current city seal and logo, the City of Cupertino now has an expanded color palette and a clearly defined typography set as a part of their identity. In the process of updating the style guide, Tripepi Smith also updated some of their city templates to be more streamlined and user friendly.

In 2019, Tripepi Smith used these brand standards for the City of Cupertino’s graphic design. In addition to their monthly publication Scene, Tripepi Smith created infographics and enhanced the layout for their annual Climate Action Plan report.

Daly City Police Department, Annual Report

Tripepi Smith created the Daly City Police Department Annual Report for 2020. We also develop their quarterly newsletter, not to mention individual mailers, ballot measure support, logo work, etc.

City of Duarte – Engagement Report

Tripepi Smith has been providing communication support on a retainer basis for the City of Duarte since June 2020. As part of our engagement, Tripepi Smith provides a monthly dashboard report to City Staff for them to review progress and distribution impacts of their communication efforts. Social media is a major component of the engagement, and Tripepi Smith provides metrics related to social media work to the City Staff each month. This metric report, which is ultimately delivered to City Council provides a critical dashboard into the City’s outreach efforts and its existence has helped advance a culture of communication at the City. Tripepi Smith strongly encourages our clients to generate monthly dashboard reports on communication efforts to ensure progress is being measured or shortcoming are being identified.

City of Fountain Valley

Tripepi Smith has supported the City of Fountain Valley in a number of ways. Recently, the City called upon our team to help create and launch its first-ever podcast, A Nice Place to Podcast. Our team helped the City with initial equipment set-up. The client now records the podcast on their own, sending it to our team for post-production editing and publishing.

City of Grover Beach

The City of Grover Beach engaged Tripepi Smith in December 2020. Our retainer engagement in this coastal City includes weekly strategy calls with key staff, social media management, writing services, quarterly content planning meetings and monthly metrics reporting. Outside of the retainer agreement, Tripepi Smith has also assisted the City with districting outreach and education to meet federal requirements, and has assisted with website development, social media outreach, community engagement, workshop planning, educational video creation and more. Finally, Grover Beach engages Tripepi Smith for ad hoc work on an as-needed basis. To date, the City has engaged the firm to complete brochure and flyer designs, assist with sensitive communications related to the police department and produce additional social media and written content. The City recently renewed its contract with Tripepi Smith for another year.

City of Indian Wells – Infographics & Mailer Design

Tripepi Smith used engaging information graphics to translate their budget data into an engaging “Budget-at-a-Glance” mailer that successfully put the information in front of the community in a digestible way.

City of La Cañada Flintridge – Website

Tripepi Smith delivered a new website for the City of La Cañada Flintridge (LCF) at the end of 2019. The site is built in WordPress and followed our standard development process: Website Specification, Website Design, Programming, Quality Assurance Testing, and Training and Launch. We have done this process dozens of times, and the results have been successful. LCF included a requirement in their RFP for an opensource solution for the website as they wanted to avoid proprietary lock-in. This result was achieved with the Tripepi Smith developed website, which also included important features like ADA compliance, proper embedding of third-party city tools, website security, pop-up alerts and a dead simple content management system that various staff feel comfortable editing. The process took about eight months to complete.

City of Lancaster - Taste the AV - Billboard

City of Lancaster – Billboard

Tripepi Smith has supported the City of Lancaster for several years, providing outreach about its Smart Cities, IMPACT community beautification, Safer Streets and local business support programs.

City of Livermore

City of Livermore has turned to Tripepi Smith for help creating materials for various City needs. A new set of brand guidelines was developed and an expanded, more functional logo library delivered. The City newsletter was redesigned, leveraging this new brand direction, and Tripepi Smith helps with additional templates and branding applications. We created truck signage for an anti-grease Sanitation campaign, and we helped create a suite of COVID holiday safety pieces (kiosk posters and matching social media imagery), and an urban planning map for use in construction banners, posters, and kiosk art.

City of Lomita

Originally, Tripepi Smith built a new user-friendly website for the City of Lomita Water Division, building and creating content for the entire website. The City was pleased and came back to Tripepi Smith in 2021 to launch their fully redesigned City site and has engaged Tripepi Smith for other marketing materials.

City of Manteca: Logos, Sub Logos, Graphic Design

Tripepi Smith has supported City of Manteca with a variety of logo work, designing distinct logos for departments or events, but also working within existing logos (like creating a “My Manteca” version of the seal or recreating their police badges into artwork that the City can customize). Along with the logo for their evening Market on Maple, Tripepi Smith designed flyers, and we’ve provided materials to support various priorities: sales tax info, redistricting, COVID info, and SB 1383 communication.

City of Napa

Tripepi Smith has been engaged with the City of Napa since late 2019. While the City originally engaged us for retainer services focused on social media creation and management, content writing and website support, they quickly expanded our engagement to include ad hoc graphic design support, video editing, infographic design and HR outreach and promotion. Beginning the engagement mere months before COVID-19 hit the U.S. meant that Napa, like cities across the country, was having to pivot their approach to communications and they turned to Tripepi Smith to assist with the influx of critical public health outreach. In addition to drafting, scheduling, and monitoring social media posts across all City platforms, Tripepi Smith has drafted written content such as letters from the City Manager, press releases, and radio scripts. On an ad hoc basis, we have completed detailed financial infographics that outlined the potential effects of COVID-19 on City finances (One of these infographics was featuredin a MarketWatch article.), wrote and designed their 2020 State of the City booklet, edited videos that told the story of local business and City support throughout the pandemic and more.

Social media management, monthly stories, website content—all helped the City engage in effective, transparent ways and measured by quarterly metrics reporting. This work generates ad hoc design projects, including graphics for finance, voter outreach and other civic messaging. For the infographic explaining coronavirus impact on budget, Tripepi Smith created an animated video:

City of Norwalk

The City of Norwalk had a dated logo and motto from the 1980s that had not kept up with the growth and evolution of the City. Tripepi Smith took the logo rebrand process from start to finish, from stakeholder engagement to delivery of final assets and guidelines.
Additionally, City of Norwalk came to Tripepi Smith for 2 transit ad campaigns: a fireworks safety campaign and an awareness campaign for the logo rebrand.

City of Pismo Beach

The City of Pismo Beach came to Tripepi Smith for help designing the vehicle wrap for their new mobile command center. Tripepi Smith created a design that balances Pismo’s unique beach identity with the traditional appearance of police vehicles. Practically speaking, this involved designing to a very specific template, as well as recreating the art for their police badge in a vector format to work at the larger size for the vehicle.

City of San Leandro: Website Design Direction & Logo

Like many cities, the City of San Leandro was ready to make their website more usable, functional and engaging. The existing site showed the aging city seal and used old colors at odds with the city’s identity as a friendly, tech-savvy place to live and work. Moreover, their immediate need for a better website meant that the city couldn’t wait for their eventual goal of a citywide rebrand. San Leandro worked with Tripepi Smith to design a new web graphic for use instead of the city seal, showing instead the city name with an iconic arch and the monarch butterflies that return to San Leandro seasonally. The process included research and outreach with staff, Council, their Arts Commission and the public. In addition to replacing the seal with something more appealing, Tripepi Smith developed a fresh color palette anchored by the red that stakeholders most identified with the city and complemented by a color family for a modern, warm tone that differentiates SanLeandro.org from neighboring cities. Along with UX improvements, this visual reinvention profoundly refreshed the site and is a model strategy for using website design as a way of exploring brand improvements prior to investing in a comprehensive organizational rebrand.

City of Yorba Linda

The City of Yorba Linda hired Tripepi Smith to lead a public engagement project related to housing policy and a potential future ballot measure to adopt zoning to keep the City in compliance with State housing mandates. Tripepi Smith led and facilitated a community group of residents with diverse viewpoints and walked them through a series of questions and policy tradeoffs for different housing ideas. That group’s work became a starting point for City Council consideration of a revised housing element that is now advancing through various City commissions. Our services spanned project management, community outreach lead, meeting facilitation, content writing, website development and media relations. Learn more about our work at YLLocalControl.com

Clean Energy Alliance

Tripepi Smith originated the 2020 branding of a new public energy agency replacing the default utility. Tripepi Smith positioned CEA as a modern, clean alternative to the existing power supplier (San Diego Gas & Electric) for the Cities of Carlsbad, Del Mar and Solana Beach. It is a good example of our work to reflect multiple communities, regional identity and a vision for the future. Tripepi Smith performed the research and analysis, designed the logo and brand fonts/colors and a style guideline cheat sheet, created iconography for service tiers, executed the photoshoot, built the original website, designed infographics, etc.

Tripepi Smith continues work with CEA for their 2021 launch and beyond.

Many communities now get their energy via a “California Choice Aggregator”, but not many of them are as committed to being full advocates for, in addition to suppliers of, clean energy. Tripepi Smith’s logo design process included setting logo options in competitor logo matrices to highlight the differentiation. The logo leverages the colors and shapes of the community—blue waves, golden hills—while being forward-looking.

CEA has an interesting Brand Relationship Tree; it serves 3 separate coastal cities (though they may grow to include inland cities), different constituencies are drawn to different brand pillars (clean energy vs. energy savings vs. local control), and they offer 3 different service tiers. Tripepi Smith developed a clean identity system, knowing that all components, especially the web site, had lots of complex information to offer.

Research indicates that the public at large has a hard time understanding and engaging with energy aggregators. By creating a bright, welcoming identity and accessible, branded infographics, Tripepi Smith has made CEA a communications leader in their sector.

Katherine’s Brand Statement defines different tones and direction for communication across different audiences and message pillars. As a public agency inextricably tied to a variety of stakeholders (consumers, elected and non-elected city representatives, even state regulators), the nuances and strategy for various communications are critical.

On the visual side, Kevin translated the brand research and logo exploration into a clear visual identity. Definitions for colors and fonts, image tone, an illustration style and repeating graphic elements all guide Tripepi Smith’s creative professionals as we roll out brand elements for CEA’s 2021 launch and beyond.
