SB 1383 Animated Video previewCalifornia’s Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) requires state residents’ participation to decrease the amount of organic materials that end up in landfills and create climate pollutants. For the Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD), this meant informing customers of a major change, so they turned to Tripepi Smith to get the word out – and with 124,000 collective views on Youtube alone, it’s safe to say they did.

“CMSD is focused on promoting sustainability and supplying our constituents with top-notch trash, recycling and wastewater services. Our team has put us at the forefront of effective communications in this space by finding innovative ways to connect with our community,” said CMSD General Manager Scott Carroll. “We have been partnering with Tripepi Smith since 2020 to elevate and amplify our communication efforts, and we’ve continuously been impressed by Tripepi Smith’s ability to maximize our reach and impact. When CMSD needed to get the word out about new statewide organics recycling requirements, Tripepi Smith delivered and helped CMSD spread awareness and support.”

With 42,000 views on its own, the introductory video of the 5-video series explains the basics of SB 1383, which requires Californians to recycle organic waste such as food scraps and yard trimmings. CMSD was tasked with educating the public and enforcing proper practices, and in turn they tapped Team Tripepi Smith to make it happen.

“With as difficult of a task as behavior change, it was instrumental for CMSD to reach as large of an audience as possible,” said Tripepi Smith Principal Jennifer Nentwig. “Tripepi Smith has been working with CMSD for quite some time, and it’s always a joy to start new projects with their team. Their dedication to sustainability and effective communication helped push this campaign to success.”

The PSA ad campaign on Facebook boasted numbers of 77,184 impressions, a reach of 31,639 and 758 engagements, while the animated video alone has 18,660 impressions with a reach of 7,382, so far. CMSD worked with a team led by Jennifer, Director Cameron Grimm, Senior Business Analyst Kaitlyn Wu, Junior Business Analyst Noelle Feaster and Junior Business Analyst John Balliet.

Signed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2016, one of SB 1383’s primary goals is to reduce organic waste like food scraps and yard trimmings that make up about 20% of the state’s methane emissions, with targets to reduce organic waste disposal 75% by 2025. With focused community engagement, and the talents of Tripepi Smith, CMSD is helping make that goal a reality.
