Tripepi Smith Junior Business Analysts Caroline Lee and Karen Villaseñor recently participated in the Executive Education (EXED) Forum for Local Leaders at the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy (USC Price), a two-day program which offers a focused curriculum in ethics, governance, leadership and public policy.

“USC Price is uniquely positioned to train leaders to improve governance around the world. The EXED Forum for Local Leaders is part our effort to improve governance in local communities,” said Frank V. Zerunyan, Director of Executive Education at the Bedrosian Center on Governance and the Public Enterprise. “If we can help local leaders foster leadership and deepen their understanding of public policy and administration, we can reach and help improve governance systems in hundreds of local communities.”

The program included four workshops on a wide-range of topics instructed by USC Price world-renowned faculty. During the first day, participants explored diversity within communities during “Strategies for Effectively Addressing Difference in the Public Organization and the Community,” while “‘Newgotiation’: The Art of Collaborative Negotiation,” addressed problem-solving and collaboration across the public sector, private sector and nonprofit organizations.

“Local governments face complex public policy and administration matters every day. The USC EXED Forum was a great opportunity to dive into those matters which are relevant to so many of the local government clients I work with,” said Lee. “This experience has been an immensely valuable supplement for my work at Tripepi Smith.”

The second day offered an extensive view into municipal and county government emergency management during “Emergency Management Considerations for Local Government Leaders: What to Do, What to Know” as well as insights for creating effective strategic plans during “What Makes a Municipal Strategic Plan Effective.” All workshops are designed and administered with the purpose of improving public administration and solving public problems.

“USC’s program offered valuable insight into the complexity of local government and served as a great reminder of topics to keep in mind while working with local government clients,” said Villaseñor. “The EXED Forum is an excellent program, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with local elected officials from across California.”

The USC EXED Forum is generally held twice a year during the spring and fall and welcomes mayors, council members, supervisors and special district board members. Tripepi Smith staff frequently attend due to the team’s extensive involvement with local governments and public agencies across California.

“The EXED Forum provides a great value to local communities by offering local elected leaders an academic setting to explore the realities of local government,” said Tripepi Smith President Ryder Todd Smith. “The program is of substantial value to Tripepi Smith team members, and I appreciate Frank Zerunyan’s leadership with this program and efforts to advance local government. Investing in USC-powered training for my team is a solid investment.”
