The City of Coronado recently adopted a social media policy that Tripepi Smith helped develop. The City has an active social media presence and council members are particularly active in this tight-knit community that hugs the Pacific Ocean. Tripepi Smith’s work with the city manager’s office focused on understanding the role of social media in the community dialogue and suggesting a policy to help the City better engage with residents while following legal best practices for staff and elected official involvement on social media.

“Coronado’s priority is transparency and public engagement with our community. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter present huge opportunities for cities to connect with residents where the residents are already spending their time. But, we must do so in a way that keeps the city and our council on the right side of the law,” said Blair King, City Manager of the City of Coronado. “Tripepi Smith was an excellent partner for Coronado in our social media efforts. They have a strong understanding of the approach many other cities are taking, yet they delivered an innovative thought process to help us understand social media’s distinct role in our community.”

Tripepi Smith is a recognized leader in local government social media consulting. With several Hootsuite Certified Social Media Marketers on the team and dozens of public agency clients, Tripepi Smith has carved out a lead role to public agencies in the digital media world.

“The City of Coronado is clearly taking a proactive role to advance resident engagement and outreach. The Staff showed genuine interest in understanding how to make social media work for the benefit of the City and residents,” said Ryder Todd Smith, President at Tripepi Smith. “Coronado is certainly a unique community with an amazing location in the world and a tight-knit community feel that many cities would hope to achieve.”

Tripepi Smith’s work with the City included interviews with City Staff and residents and an on-site debrief with the City’s senior staff to discuss findings and observations. The City’s new social media policy provides guidelines for the planning, management, and efficient use and control of its social media sites. The Coronado City Council unanimously adopted the proposed social media policy in February 2017.
