Social Media News to Know – June 2025
Tripepi Smith’s Always-Be-Learning (#ABL) culture drives us to stay up to speed on constantly changing social media platforms. This knowledge empowers our team to track, interpret and adapt to the latest and greatest social media trends on behalf of the public agencies we serve. The following is the latest installment of our regular roundup of social media news you need to know:
- YouTube is testing a new feature that lets Shorts viewers use Google Lens to search what they see in a video. By pausing a Short, users can tap into Lens to identify objects or translate on-screen text. The platform hopes this will add a new layer of interactivity to the viewing experience.
- X is rolling out the beta version of its new “Chat” feature to select users. The platform is rebuilding its direct messaging system with a focus on enhanced privacy, prompting users to create a four-digit code to access their chat inbox.
- Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos, the native format for many smartphone cameras. Images shot in 3:4 will appear in their original dimensions in the feed, without being stretched or cropped, preserving the true look and feel of the content.
- Also from Instagram is the expansion of its comment filtering tools to creators with over 100,000 followers. This allows users to sort their comments by engagement, recency or the commenter’s follower count, giving creators greater control over how they manage audience feedback.
- Meta is expanding its AI ad control options, including new Value Optimization parameters that further allow marketers to prioritize campaign objectives. This ensures users’ ad spend is focused on the most impactful conversions and marks another step toward Meta’s long-term goal of fully automated advertising.
