Tripepi Smith Organizes Virtual Conference on Redistricting

Tripepi Smith played a major role in producing the Rose Institute of State and Local Government’s virtual 2021 Redistricting: New Rules for Local Governments conference in September 2020, bringing nearly 200 local government practitioners from across California together to discuss the nuances of the upcoming redistricting cycle.

“I’m so pleased Tripepi Smith could join so many distinguished experts and facilitate a platform for local officials to connect with redistricting experts this fall,” said Tripepi Smith President Ryder Todd Smith. “While the pandemic may have shifted us online, the show had to go on as the Census and resulting 2021 redistricting were going to happen regardless. Meeting in 2020 to share knowledge on California’s redistricting laws and process was important to everyone. A wave of redistricting is going to start in the coming months, and we know the Rose Conference helped dozens of public agencies across the state prepare for that process.”

In close coordination with the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College and conference sponsors Nielsen Merksamer and National Demographics Corporation, Ryder and Bryn coordinated all technical aspects of the conference. Tripepi Smith configured the set up for webinar sessions, breakout rooms, an attendee portal, a networking space and a resource library for nearly 200 conference attendees. Tripepi Smith also assisted with marketing efforts for the event.

Additionally, Ryder facilitated a discussion on the outreach aspect of the district formation process featuring Melissa Kuehne from the Institute for Local Government and Jonathan Mehta Stein from California Common Cause.

“When it became clear we couldn’t have an in-person event, Ryder and Bryn stepped up and took on the task of converting our entire conference into a virtual experience,” said Rose Institute Director Andrew Busch. “Tripepi Smith’s topical knowledge of redistricting and extensive experience in online communications was evident from the quality of the conference. Along with the superb content provided by our panelists and keynote speaker, Ryder’s and Bryn’s work was central to the event’s success.”

Due to Tripepi Smith’s close ties to the Rose Institute, the firm provided all labor for the conference organization pro bono. Ryder is the Vice Chair of the Rose Institute Board of Governors, and Bryn was a research assistant at the Institute throughout her four years at Claremont McKenna College.

A committee of experts ably assisted with developing the conference concept and subject matter, including: Dr. Andrew Busch, Rose Institute Executive Director; Bipasa Nason, Rose Institute Assistant Director for Research and Publications; Marionette Moore, Rose Institute Administrative Assistant; Darryl Wold, attorney and past chair of the Rose Institute Board of Governors; Chris Skinnell, a partner at Nielsen Merksamer; Marguerite Leoni, a partner at Nielsen Merksamer and Douglas Johnson, the president of National Demographics Corporation.

Individuals interested in accessing conference materials – including recorded sessions – may contact Marionette Moore (mmoore@cmc.edu) to coordinate payment and access.
