Laptop with budget infographics on the screen.Long-time Tripepi Smith VIP, the City of Napa, has tapped Tripepi Smith’s graphic design team to update the ‘Napa: By the Numbers’ section of their 2020-2021 Annual Budget Book. The book is designed to provide a detailed account of the year’s budget, while also distilling complex budget matters down into digestible formats for City residents. The City specifically wanted Tripepi Smith’s help in creating a visually appealing and easy-to-read account of important Napa statistics to ensure transparency and support public engagement.

Senior Graphic Artist Kjerstin Wingert led the effort, designing a set of beautiful infographics for the ‘Napa: By the Numbers’ section. Senior Business Analyst Bria Balliet was the project manager and handled all of the content organization and writing.

Tablet with PAFR infographics on the screen.“Budgets are complicated documents that are difficult to unpack, even for local government professionals. We called upon Tripepi Smith to create a more approachable summary section that shared the facts with the community in a way they can understand,” said Napa Deputy City Manager Liz Habkirk. “The section Tripepi Smith designed adds an extra dimension to the book and our team is really excited about the result. It was an excellent collaboration that also helps our City meet GFOA requirements.”

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) manages a strict list of standards that Cities must meet regarding their budget communications. Napa had wanted to improve upon the ‘Napa: By the Numbers’ section, in particular, to ensure that they met these standards. Tripepi Smith was pleased with the opportunity to lend more design support to the City’s finance department.

“A running theme with our work in Napa is public education and transparency. The City is focused on properly informing the community so that government is more approachable. Our collaboration with the Finance Department and City Manager’s Office has been great,” said Director Jon Barilone. “The book was full of interesting facts and figures about the city and the community it serves.”

Tripepi Smith has also provided design support for additional infographics, including PAFR infographics.

About the City of Napa

Napa is an old City by California standards, founded in 1847 as a jumping-off point for 49ers bound for the Gold Rush. Today, Napa is a vibrant and modern community with a respect for its colorful past. While yesterday’s jobs came largely in heavy industrial pursuits, today’s workforce is mostly white-collar and the economy is increasingly based on tourism. Napa enjoys low crime rates, high standards of living, clean air and nearly perfect weather year-round.
