Seven Tips For Interviewing Well

  |   Marketing   |   No comment

The beauty of promotional video is that it is highly controlled. In contrast to live news reporting or third party interviews,Shoot when your company creates its own content you and your team will have time to prepare, and the ability to fix anything that isn’t working.

If you find yourself gearing up to step in front of the camera, here are a few simple tips to help you make the most of the experience.

  1. Review questions beforehand if possible, but don’t worry about memorizing answers. You want to have an idea of what you’re going to say, but you don’t want to come off as sounding stiff and rehearsed.
  2. Wear dark browns and blues in classic cuts. Avoid pure black or white as they can make you look washed out. Bright red or patterns can show up poorly on video. Women should keep jewelry simple. It also never hurts to have a backup outfit in the car in case you spill your coffee.
  3. It’s a great idea to get a haircut a few days before stepping in front of the camera, and women should avoid pony tails. Simple makeup helps cut shine and is a must for both men and women.
  4. Be relaxed, professional and engaged. Sit or stand still without fidgeting and avoid chairs that swivel or rock. Before the camera starts rolling, adjust your posture so that your back doesn’t touch the chair.
  5. Don’t be afraid of dead air. Short, strong sentences are best. Be sure to pause between thoughts and at the end of your statements – this helps the editor and gives you time to breathe. When pausing to think, look down, not up, so that you don’t appear to be rolling your eyes.
  6. There are exceptions, but generally, you want to make eye contact with the person you’re talking to and ignore the camera.
  7. Don’t let mistakes throw you. If you realize you’ve talked yourself into a hole, finish what you’re saying, and then simply ask if you can answer the question again.

Creating video content for your company or organization requires forethought and planning, but it should also be enjoyable, because odds are that if you have fun making it, your target audience will have just as much fun watching it.
