Image Optimization – What You Need to Know

  |   Insights, Search Engine Optimization   |   No comment

wordsThe internet loves images. Content with photos is seen more often than content without. It shows up higher on search returns and is given more attention by news aggregators.

If you’re just beginning to using images on your website, there are a few things to know in order to make the most of your efforts:

1. Before you upload an image, ditch the DS01928849 name given to the file by your camera and instead give it a name that actually describes it. For head-shots use the full name of the person. For products include the color, make, and model.

2. Take advantage of Alt tags. When you post an image to your site, check to make sure the alt tag reflects the title of the image. This does require a basic knowledge of html, but it is a key way in which search engines find your image. If you’re unfamiliar with html, ask your web programer, favorite IT guy, or contact us – we’ll walk you through it.

3. Make sure your image is a reasonable size. Most images on your site don’t need to be more than 100kb. If you post a 5mb photo on your site it will dramatically slow down the speed at which it loads. People simply won’t wait around for 15 seconds while you webpage loads because of a huge image. They will simply go find another page to look at. You can use photoshop to shrink the size of your image, or, if you don’t have photoshop, you can use one of the many free options available online (try GIMP, PicMonkey, or Pixlr).

Images can do a lot to increase traffic to your website. Armed with the knowledge of how to use them correctly, you can go forth with confidence.
